Reading
Bubble sheets here we come! Our students are being exposed to test taking strategies.
We are working hard to transfer answers from tests to bubble sheets. Exposure
to this will allow the students to see what they will be using in third grade.
We have about 4 weeks left before we begin our end of year reading
assessments. In our reading groups, students will be working mainly on text
comprehension and writing. I encourage all parents to ask your child all about
the book that he/she is reading. These questions should include cause and
effect, inference, text features, summaries, and main idea. The accelerated reading goal
for the 4th marking period will be 10 points with 80 percent accuracy.
Math
Our math unit this month will focus on 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. Students will
recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number
of angles or a given number of equal faces. Students will identify triangles,
quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. We will also continue to practice
with telling time, and using data to display on graphs. We have several students
that are now being challenged with multiplication facts. Please continue to
practice daily with facts. It really does make for a much smoother adjustment
to third grade.

Science
Our final science unit this year will be on plants and yes, my favorite of
all......animals!!! This is my ultimate favorite unit to teach. I have many fun
things to show the children. We will explore life cycles of birds, fish, mammals,
insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Second graders will also be involved with
hatching chicks. We will incubate the eggs and wait patiently for 21 days
to see the miracle that emerges. The students LOVE this activity!!!
Hands down this will be the unit they remember most about second grade.
Social Studies
Economics will be our next social studies unit. Students will learn all about
budgets, spending, saving, bartering, and scarcity. We will create a monthly spending plan,
explore the tax on goods, interest rates, and learn the true value of a dollar. In a world of
credit cards and debit cards, I still find it very valuable for children to know how to write a
check. These may become obsolete in the future, but all children should know their
options for spending.
Students will learn why it is important to display good acts of
kindness at school, home, and their community. Our class will also
discuss rules and consequences and why it is essential to follow
them within our community in order to keep us safe.
